So, social media in China. If they were on Facebook, like the rest of the world (except Iran, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Syria), this would be easy. We'd just log onto our own accounts and whip out our list of a million new friend requests from the land of the Han. But the Great Firewall is holding back that flood. Right now, I'm thinking that's a good thing.

When I and my two research assistants/camermen set out to Beijing and Xi'an to film our documentary, Brush Up!, we knew very little about our topic. Like the rest of the world, we had been drawn to the issue of character amnesia a year ago (Summer 2010) when a series of articles appeared in major Chinese and English newspapers.

The following is a sampling of Mao era children's literature translated for the first time in English by Centre College's Intermediate Chinese students. These stories, songs, slogans, and articles give a glimpse of what it would have been like to be a child at a time when ideology was mandated over learning, and labor over play.
